In the middle of November the German 6th Army made one more attempt to break through at Ypres. It was their last chance. To their right the twenty miles of the Ypres-Nieuport Canal and the River Yser were held by an ad hoc French army and the remainder of the Belgian army under King Albert which had withdrawn down the coast from Antwerp. The King ordered the locks on the canalized river at Nieuport to be opened, and the sea water inundated the low-lying fenland in the enemy’s path. The whole weight of the German right wing’s attacks fell therefore on the British in the Ypres Salient and on the junction with the French. This was only defeated by the most stubborn fighting and determined counter-attacks. Most of the BEF’s cavalry were in the trenches at some time during the last German push. The machine-gun sections were particularly busy and suffered badly. The weather was atrocious – the Eighteenth’s war diary complains that:

“Sleep was impossible for those who in turn were allowed to try and enjoy an hour or so of it, and the long night through we waxed colder, until the first streak of dawn stopped further pretence of courting repose, and enabled us to stamp our feet in the sloshy mud and try to regain some feeling in our frozen extremities. It snowed all night of the 18th and lay quite deep next morning.”
